Warner Bros. Studios sets the tone this year with multiple horror box office wins including ‘Sinners’ and now ‘Weapons’. Zach Cregger’s lauded horror film racked up $27.5 million in its opening weekend. Coming from 73 international markets, this brings its global gross to $70 million. With a $38 million production budget, this is a terrific sign for weeks to come.
‘Weapons’ was released by Warner Bros. and New Line, starring Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan. Its plot follows the community of a small town in Pennsylvania where seventeen children go missing at the same time during the night. According to Rotten Tomatoes, with over half of the year being gone only six films with an original screenplay have led the box office. ‘Weapons’ has become the seventh film to join this group, making horror one of the biggest genres this year in movies. Currently, it is certified 95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Weapons’ shared its opening weekend with ‘Freakier Friday’ starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. The Disney sequel earned $15.5 million this weekend in a very solid debut.
