If a person living in 2025 was asked by someone from the future what were key components of the year it’d have to be Labubu dolls, “Kindness is punk rock”, and of course Netflix’s ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’. The film came out towards the end of June and has become one of the biggest highlights of the summer. Not only are the animations terrific, the music is phenomenal, and the characters are one of a kind. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the movie follows K-pop girl group Huntr/x who work in secret as demon hunters. Their rivals, boy band Saja Boys are undercover demons who try to steal Huntr/x’s fans in order weaken a magical barrier called the Honmoon.
‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ cast includes Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Alan Lee, SungWon Cho, Danny Chung, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun.
As of now, ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ has become the second most viewed film on Netflix. It is on a quest to beat out 2021’s ‘Red Notice’ to become the most watched film of the streaming platform. Not only could it become Netflix’s most watched film but their most defining one.
How Netflix and ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ Did It
So many films have gone the route of going into theaters and then straight to streaming later. Currently, animated films haven’t been doing too well in the box office i.e. ‘Elio’ and ‘Smurfs’. Being a family oriented film, ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ going straight to Netflix works in their favor. When one thinks of families, they think of convenience. What’s more convenient than watching a film at home with your children instead of having to round everyone up to go to the AMC? Especially, in a year where horror and slice of life films seem to take the trophy at the box office. ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ boasts a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score.
