The Joni Mitchell biopic has a casting update! An entertainment news writer, Jeff Sneider, reported an exclusive insight into the singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell biopic directed by Cameron Crowe. Anya Taylor-Joy and Meryl Streep are in talks to star in the biopic.
Initially, Mitchell’s website posted the news of the film on July 17, 2025, according to Sneider. Crowe will direct the film. The film will shoot in late summer/early fall. The biopic will be Crowe’s first film that he has directed in almost ten years, with “Aloha.”
Meryl Streep will play the present-day Mitchell. She will showcase Mitchell’s journey from her rise in the folk scene to her lasting cultural impact. Taylor-Joy will play Michell during the 60s and 70s, including when she wrote her album titled “Blue,” according to Today.

Crowe is a former Rolling Stone journalist from the ’70s, who famously interviewed Mitchell in 1979. Crowe and Mitchell remained close friends, which will make the biopic accurate, authentic, and thoughtful. Sneider reports that the pair are collaborating on the script, with filming expected to start in 2026. It’s said not to be a traditional biopic.
