It has been announced that a film adaptation of the Archie comics is in the works at Universal Pictures. The classic comic book series is nearly ninety years old and has sold three billion copies worldwide. Archie Andrews first appeared in 1941’s Pep Comics. No. 22. Its popularity led to the creation of its own series the Archie Comics in Winter 1942.
Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be overseeing this project. “We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty and the gang in all of their iterations. When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen,” said Lord and Miller in a statement.
Emma Watts is slated to produce the movie. The film will be very hands on, gathering a promising team for its development. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Archie Comics CEO and publisher Jon Goldwater will be working behind the scenes as well as Aditya Sood.
The old crew of the Archie Comics gang continues to resonate with generations to come. In the 2010s, CW released Riverdale, a drama based off of the Archie-world featuring darker, edgier subtones to its plot. Riverdale starred KJ Apa, Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, and Camila Mendes.
