A French movie adaptation of famed Broadway show ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ has begun filming. Deva Cassel, Julien De Saint Jean, and Romain Duris are set to co star in the film. This version of the film will be a bit different from others, as producers seek to focus on a young adult market. ‘Phantom of the Opera’ is rumored to be a striking reimaging of the 1909 novel by Gaston Leroux.
‘Phantom of the Opera’ is being produced by Paris-based company SND. Writing and directing is done by Alexandre Castagnetti.
“The announcement of the project has sparked global excitement, positioning The Phantom of the Opera as a standout title for 2026,” said Ramy Nahas, Director of International Distribution, SND.
“With significant commercial and artistic potential, the film has already attracted international distributors. We look forward to collaborating with our partners to bring the film to theaters and to securing additional distribution agreements in the coming months.”
Principal photography for the film recently began at the Palais Garnier house in Paris. Cassel stars as eighteen year old ballet dancer, Anastasia, who takes joins the company of dancers at the Opera Garnier. Artisitc director, James Figueras played by Duris, is reviving ‘Orpheus’, the opera by Ernest Dupre who is known as the Phantom of the Opera.
Following the classic storyline, Anastasia meets the phantom one night, eventually landing the lead role in the opera.
The film is produced by Segolene Dupont, Remi Jimenez, and Thierry Desmichelle.
The film is set to be released on September 23, 2026 in France.
