The Muppet Show is returning as a TV special, with the possibility of something more. To explain, the series will return as a TV special sometime in 2026, with the chance it can serve as a backdoor pilot for a series revival. The special will include singer/songwriter Sabrina Carpenter as a guest star. All in all, with Carpenter heavily involved, alongside veteran talent, the special is in the best hands that it could possibly be in.
Muppet Show 50th Anniversary Will Be Something Special

In short, the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show is about to be much more special. A revival of sorts, through a TV special, has been announced. To clarify, at the time of writing, no plot details have been released. However, Variety notes that “the special could serve as a backdoor pilot that would help launch a new iteration of the iconic series.”
Veterans Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman and Matt Vogel will return as the Muppets. Singer/songwriter Sabrina Carpenter will guest star. Alex Timbers will direct the special. Albertina Rizzo will write the special. Timbers, Rizzo, and Carpenter are executive producers. They join Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee (all from Point Grey Pictures), David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, Michael Steinbach (all from The Muppets Studio), Matt Vogel and Eric Jacobson in that role. 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio, and Point Grey Pictures all serve as production companies.
As a matter of fact, as Variety notes, the original The Muppet Show was “created by Jim Henson, ran from 1976-81 and aired in over 100 countries.” It included guest stars such as Elton John, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, Debbie Harry, Gladys Knight, Liza Minelli, and Paul Simon.
With this in mind, new and old fans alike will be excited for the new TV special. With new and returning talent alike, everyone will be in mind for something truly special.

Many of the veteran Muppet performers are returning to their roles. With that, the special is about to be something truly unique, just like the original series.
