This Sunday, Mexico bested the US in a 2-1 victory in the 2025 CONCACAF World Cup. The World Cup takes place every other year, hosting teams from the North and Central Americas as well as the Caribbean. This years tournament was held in Canada and the US and began on June 14. Running concurrently with CONCACAF was the FIFA Club World Cup. CONCACAF hosted mainly in the western portion of the United States as to not conflict with FIFA which was running on the eastern side.
The championship was played at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas this past Sunday. Their win marks their 10th World Cup victory, a record for the confederation. This also marks back to back titles for the team. Mexico has established itself as one of the best teams in international football, qualifying for the FIFA World Cup consecutively since 1994. Coached by Javier Aguirre, the Mexico team has been a force to be reckoned with heading into the new season.
The Mexico Team Sets the Tone for the Future
Chris Richards scored the first goal of the game for the US. Raul Jimenez responded before halftime with a clean sweep past the U.S keeper Matthew Freese. Jimenez paid tribute to his former teammate Diogo Jota who was killed in a car crash along with his brother last week. Edson Alvarez scored the winning goal clenching the victory for the team.
As the Mexico national team sets its sights on next year’s FIFA World Cup, this victory gives them a moment to celebrate will continuing to push forward. Team captain Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa expressed this fervor in an interview with Goal.
“I’m going to fight for a place in the World Cup,” Ochoa stated firmly. “I’m not asking for favors – I want to earn it. It would be incredible to be part of that tournament. I train and compete every day with my club to stay at the highest level. People who have followed my career know how much I’ve given, and they know I’ll continue giving everything if I get the chance.”
