This summer has become a significant, career-defining one for Chilean-American actor Pedro Pascal. He has starred in three major releases this summer. These include ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ as well as A24 movies ‘The Materialists’ and ‘Eddington’. Just last year he starred in ‘Gladiator II’ not to mention his main role in ‘The Last of Us’. His credits make a statement about ageism in the industry. His ascent to international fame after his role in ‘The Mandalorian’ posed a challenge to Hollywood narratives surrounding age. Pascal once operated under the radar as an actor with a career stretching nearly 30 years. With his recent roles, he’s quite obviously proven that your age doesn’t define the trajectory of your dreams.
Pascal Causes a Shift in Hollywood
After it was revealed that he’d star as Mr. Fantastic in ‘The Fantastic Four’, backlash ensued with it mainly surrounding his age. However, none of this criticism has deterred the 50 year old actor who seems to be in his prime.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Pascal expressed his feelings around the backlash.
“I think that sometimes the outside will find you, no matter how much you try to protect yourself from it,” Pascal said. “It just comes with the territory. I think maybe my nerves were bigger than they usually are, and so I think I just was a little bit more sensitive to the love that people have for stories like this, because I know that they wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the love that people have for these characters.”
Last month, Pascal featured in ‘The Materialts’ as Harry Castillo, an obnoxiously wealthy bachelor who is the third piece to an intereting love triangle. This weekend, ‘Eddington’ will be released in theaters followed by ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ next weekend. ‘Eddington’ is a neo-Western black comedy set in Eddington, New Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pascal portrays Ted Garcia, the mayor of the small town who faces off against the sheriff Joe Cross, played by Joaquin Phoenix. ‘The Fantastic Four’ is the first release from Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making the anticipation even greater.
