In a version of David versus Goliath, the Chelsea team defeated the giant in a 3-0 shutout. The inaugural champions beat PSG in Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday. Chelsea came in strong and rarely let up, coming to a 3-0 lead before halftime. Midfielder Cole Palmer scored two goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. Joao Pedro set the final score later on in the game. Palmer received the Golden Ball as the best player of the series.
By all intents and purposes, PSG was slated to win this game, adding more metal to their trophy case. They’ve absolutely dominated this year winning the French Cup, French Super Cup, and the French league. They earned their thirteenth title in the French league this year, with it being their fourth consecutive win since 2021. If anything, Chelsea adopted PSG’s style, setting up a great game from the jump that put it out of their opponents reach.
Chelsea defender Levi Colwill spoke with CBS on the team’s strategy, “Going into the game straightaway, we set the tone. We pressed the life out of them. We knew this was our last game of football for the season so there’s no way I was going to go on holiday and sit there thinking, ‘I wish I could have gave that little bit more for the team,’ and I’ve told everyone this before, and we went and gave everything and that’s what the scoreline reflects and that’s why we won today.”
Chelsea has even more of a reason to celebrate with the win giving Enzo Maresca his first title has head coach. In a conference after the game, he gave PSG their props. “I think that PSG are a team that, you either press them high or you’ll be in trouble because they have so many talented players,” he stated, “but if you give them time to link up and get the ball, they’re so good that in my personal opinion, if you give them time, then you’ll be worse off.”
