After seven long years since her debut album ‘Invasion of Privacy’, rapper Cardi B has announced some great news. She will officially be releasing her second studio album ‘Am I The Drama’ via Atlantic Records. Last week, she released her first single in nearly a year titled ‘Outside’ before hinting at a new announcement.
“Seven years, and the time has come,” she said. “Seven years of love, life, and loss. Seven years, I gave them grace, but, now, I give them hell. I learned power is not given; it’s taken. I’m shedding feathers and no more tears. I’m not back; I’m beyond. I’m not your villain; I’m your karma. The time is here. The time is now.”
The Return of Cardi B
Cardi B’s return will definitely be an anticipated one, although she never really left. In the years since ‘Invasion of Privacy’, she’s appeared on a number of features including ‘Rumors’ with Lizzo, ‘Wild Side’ with Normani, and ‘Tomorrow’ with Glorilla. The New York bred rapper has occasionally blessed us with singles like ‘Up’, ‘Enough (Miami)’ and the hit collab ‘WAP’ that she did with Megan Thee Stallion. She continues to anchor herself in the rap game with surprise appearances. However, it’s obvious that everything has been leading up to this.
The success of ‘Invasion of Privacy’ left fans and critics alike wanting more from Cardi B. Her assent is believed to have jumpstarted a female rap renaissance spawning acts like Latto and Glorilla. Cardi used her platform to promote up and coming female artists as well. Rolling Stone and Time listed ‘Invasion of Privacy’ as the best album of 2018. At the 61st Grammy Awards, she won Best Rap Album in addition to being nominated for several other awards. The last female rapper to win this award was Lauryn Hill for ‘Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’; Doechii was the most recent winner of the award for ‘Alligator Bites Never Heal’. It was seamless for Cardi to establish herself as a superstar.
Witnessing the ‘Invasion of Privacy’ era felt like seeing a monumental rise towards the stars. Cardi’s impact on the rap scene has been undeniable which is why fans have been so restless over the past few years for a new project. ‘Am I The Drama’ could be one of the biggest albums of the year, and one of the biggest of her career. Let’s see where the hard-hitting prowess of Cardi B takes her in this new project.
