It’s official. The FIFA Club World Cup final has been set between Paris Saint Germain and Chelsea. The Parisians obliterated Real Madrid in the semifinal at MetLife Stadium on Wednesday in a 4-0 shutout. Chelsea bested Fluminense 2-1 the day prior.
PSG manager Luis Enrique put into perspective the meaning of this moment to the team. “We’re happy, we’re in the final, and it’s been an incredible season. We want to win this final. Everyone saw the stifling heat, it’s incredible to play in that. I think it affected both teams, but we kept playing and fighting. I think it’s a beautiful moment for all Parisians.”
The Chelsea team comes in as a bit of an underdog in the matchup. This year alone, PSG has won the French cup, the French Super Cup, and the French league. PSG is quite literally the best club on the globe. They’ve dominated throughout the Club World Cup with only one loss to Botafogo.
This is Chelsea’s first year with coach Enzo Maresca. In an interview with USA Today, Maresca stated “Now, everyone is talking about Chelsea, the way we play, and the way we win games. This is personally the biggest achievement of the season.”
The new coach is up for the challenging noting the grit that Chelsea has displayed throughout the season. In an ESPN article he states, “For sure it will be difficult, but all games are difficult. Fluminense beat Inter and they reached the Champions League final; Al Hilal beat Manchester City.
This year the FIFA Club World Cup featured 32 teams from all six FIFA federations.
The championship game will be this Sunday, July 13.
