It is offical- ‘Hacks’ will be renewed for another season! After the recent success of it’s fourth season and a shocking finale, fans of “Hacks” are in for an additional treat. Two days before its season finale, Hacks creators Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky announced that “Hacks” was renewed for its fifth season.
The aftermath of Writers Guild of America strike of 2023 resulted in an era of hiatuses . While some shows were able to survive these pauses in production, many weren’t which makes Hacks entering its fifth season even more impressive. The hit show made its debut in 2021 starring Jean Smart as Deborah Vance, a prominent Las Vegas comedian and her struggling head writer Ava Daniels, played by Hannah Einbinder. It’s ensemble cast includes Mark Indelicato, Paul W. Downs, Megan Slater and Carl Clemons Hopkins to name a few. Hacks holds a presitgous spot in current televsion with an aggregated Rotten Tomatoes score that consistently ranks in the high nineties.
The renewal of the dark comedy has been a moment of joy for both fans and those who have made the show into what we know and love. Creator Paul W. Downs expressed his gratitude and excitement for the renewal in an interview with TV Insider. “We feel so lucky that we get to do a fifth season of comedy. We’re like, it shouldn’t be this way, but we feel really fortunate because it’s so rare. We feel incredibly lucky.”

The renewal of “Hacks” is a deserving one as the show has been a testament to consistency and nuanced plots. Since its first season, “Hacks” has gained critical acclaim with many critics and viewers praising the onscreen chemistry between Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. In their respective roles, the actresses take two self-centered characters and transform them something greater. They are dual partners in an intimate friendship as they navigate the different stages of their careers. The complex relationship between Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels is the axis on which the story revolves, with a mutual respect for one another being at the foundation of it.
“Hacks” praise has translated well to awards season, consistently racking up additions to its trophy case. In its first three seasons, it was nominated for a whopping 48 Emmys, winning nine. At the Golden Globes this year, lead actress Jean Smart took home the Best Actress award and the show itself won Best Television Series. It would be surprising to no one, to see “Hacks” appear in nomination lists during next years awards season.
With the announcement of the new season being so recent, viewers can expect to be waiting a little while for more episodes. For now, continue to binge old episodes on HBO Max
