HBO has announced who will be playing Harry, Hermione, and Ron in the upcoming Harry Potter HBO Max series. Though many will be willing to dismiss the show altogether, due to the controversial decisions made by Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, there are others who will be willing to give the series a chance. This news certainly helps that crowd, especially with filming set to begin later this summer at Leavesden. It is certainly an exciting time to be a Potterhead, as a new era for the franchise is just around the corner.
Who Is Playing The Harry Potter Main Trio?
As implied, on May 27, 2025, HBO revealed who will be playing the main trio in the Harry Potter HBO Max series. Dominic McLaughlin (left) will play Harry Potter. Arabella Stanton (middle) will play Hermione Granger. Alastair Stout (right) will play Ron Weasley.
In regards to McLaughlin, this will be his second-ever acting credit by the time the series releases. His first will be an upcoming family comedy film made by Sky, Growth, set to release this year. To point out, another Harry Potter series star in Growth will be Nick Frost, who will be playing Rubeus Hagrid. In short, Growth will give McLaughlin and Frost an oppourtunity to build some chemistry, which will end up being cruical down the road for the Harry Potter series.
By comparsion, this will be Stanton’s first on-screen acting credit. As a matter of fact, however, this will be her third overall acting credit. She has starred as the title character in the West End of London production of Matilda the Musical from 2023-2024. She also appeared in the West End production of Starlight Express, playing the character Control, from 2024-2025.
As for Stout, this will be his first-ever acting credit. The only known professional footage of him that fans have found is him appearing within the final ten seconds (from the 0:52 timestamp onwards) of an ad for Jersey Royal, as seen below:
What This Ultimately Means
In conclusion, the revealed Harry Potter main trio for the upcoming HBO Max series are relative newcomers to the on-screen acting game. It will be interesting to see how they will handle their respective roles. Another point fans are wondering is what the chemistry between the three will be like. Regardless, this series will be scrutinized by Potterheads around the world, as they await to see what comes of the series based on their beloved franchise.
