Filmmaker Sofia Coppola will premiere her first documentary, Marc by Sofia, at the 2025 Venice Film Festival this September. The Marc by Sofia documentary will present Coppola’s longtime best friend and collaborator, Marc Jacobs.
Marc by Sofia is a play on Jacobs’s now-defunct Marc by Marc Jacobs line. The documentary will premiere in an out-of-competition slot at the Venice Film Festival (Harper’s Bazaar, 2025). The festival will run from Aug.27 to Sept. 9, 2025.
“[Sofia] wanted to meet me, and when we did, it was love at first sight for me! Not only was I attracted to how she looked, her sense of style, I was drawn to her manner, her behavior, her life, her ambitions, and creativity… She represented everything I am drawn to – talent, style, creativity, a unique ‘vision and voice’,” Marc on Sofia via Instagram.
Coppola has directed industry favorite films like Priscilla, Marie Antoinette, and The Virgin Suicides. Marc by Sofia is the first documentary about Marc Jacobs since 2007’s Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton.
Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs: A 30-Year Friendship

Copolla and Jacobs first met backstage at the CFDA members’ grunge collection for Perry Ellis in 1992. Thirty years later, they still have a personal and creative bond (Vogue, 2025). “When I first met Marc, we hit it off right away,” Coppola wrote in the introduction of Phaidon book Marc Jacobs Illustrated. “I had met great designers before, but here was someone easy to talk to, in beat-up Stan Smiths, who liked the same bands and artists and had the same appreciation and sense of humour about the idea of being ‘lady-like’.”
Genuine friendship is the foundation of the Marc by Sofia documentary. Creators have yet to release the documentary details.
