Timothee Chalamet’s new film ‘Marty Supreme’ premiered recently at the 2025 New York Film Festival. Chalamet stars as Marty Mauser, a table tennis wunderkind growing up in 1950s New York City. Mauser is hyper-fixated on becoming a world champion in his sport, though not without pushback from his peers and family. Directed by Josh Safdie, the film is loosely based off of ping pong legend Marty Reisman.
‘Marty Supreme’ has become a lauded film since its premiere, with some calling this some of Chalamet’s best work. Chalamet has even said that he’s been practicing ping-pong for several years to prepare for his role as Marty. All while filming and touring for his films like the ‘Dune’ series, ‘A Complete Unknown’, and ‘Wonka’, Chalamet took lessons before even working on ‘Marty Supreme’. Known for his intense preparation techniques, this signals a role that could be career defining for Chalamet.
“I had a table in London while I was making Wonka,” he said. “On Dune 2, I had a table in Budapest, Jordan. I had a table in Abu Dhabi. I had a table at the Cannes Film Festival for The French Dispatch. I got myself an Airbnb in a town [around] Saint-Tropez after The French Dispatch, overlooking the water, and I was taking lessons there.”
‘Marty Supreme’ is going to feature high levels performance and filmography from all involved. Safdie, even consulted Diego Schaaf who coordinated the brief ping pong scene in ‘Forrest Gump’ and the 2007 movie ‘Balls of Fury’. The cast also features Tyler, the Creator, Gwyneth Paltrow, Fran Drescher, and Odessa A’zion. An official trailer was released last month by A24.
‘Marty Supreme’ releases on Christmas Day.
