Warner Bros. Studios has officially greenlit the sequel to the ‘A Minecraft Movie’. The first film released earlier this spring becoming a blockbuster hit and amassing $957.8 million in the box office. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is the second highest grossing film of 2025 behind Disney’s ‘Lilo and Stitch’. The turnaround for Minecraft 2 is pretty fast considering how fresh the film is. A release date has already been set for July 23, 2027. This positions the sequel as a memorable summer movie that draws in tons of fans, possibly shooting past its total for this year.
Although details about Minecraft 2 have not been revealed, a lot of key players from the first movie will be returning. Filmmaker Jared Hess known for his work on ‘The Last Man on Earth’ will return to direct the movie. He will write the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ explored four misfits (Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Emma Myers) sucked into the cubical realm called the Overworld. In order to return to their homes, they have to unite with Steve (portrayed by Jack Black) and defend the land from evil forces known as the Piglins.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ catapulted Warner Bros. Studios into cultural dominance during 2025. Following ‘Minecraft’ Warner Bros. released ‘Sinners’, ‘Final Destination Bloodlines’, ‘F1’, ‘Superman’, ‘Weapons’, and ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’.
The movie was expected to make around $70 million in its opening weekend but soared to $80 million.
