Sofia Carson has gotten her fair share of roles as of late. Following the conclusion (for now) of her time as Evie in Disney’s Descendants, she has taken on a number of roles for Netflix. From Cassie Salazar in 2022’s Purple Hearts, to Nora Parisi and Alex Rose in Carry On and The Life List, respectively.
Now, she’s got a new role as intelligent American student Anna De La Vega in My Oxford Year. All in all, it’s another Netflix drama film, with one of the more underrated stars of this generation. However, it appears that the film is not as well received as Carson and the creatives are hoping for.
My Oxford Year First Reviews and Reactions

Sofia Carson stars as Anna De La Vega, an American student looking to live out a childhood dream. The film is based off a book of the same name.
As it stands, the film is, seemingly, universally disliked by the general populace. At the time of writing, the film holds a 28% critic and 46% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In terms of the reactions and reviews, they are certainly mixed, to say the least.
For example, the Hindustan Times writes: “Adapted from the novel by Julia Whelan, the new Netflix release offers just the fuzzy, bittersweet aftertaste of a good romcom.” Meanwhile, EscribiendoCine writes: “Although it attempts to capture the sensibility of stories like The Fault in Our Stars, the result is limited to a collection of empty quotes, devoid of real conflict or emotional depth.”
As it appears, the film appears to fall victim to Netflix’s quantity over quality, at least for some. For others, this doesn’t appear to be the case. In short, fans will need to watch the film for themselves, to see whether or not for them it is up to their standards of what they expect out of a film.
When Will Netflix’s Fortunes Change?

Netflix has had major win after major win in the television game. Series like Wednesday and Stranger Things are beloved by fans and critics alike. However, their film game is another story. Though Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story has done very well, other films such as the Rebel Moon films have not done as well.
In conclusion, Netflix needs to figure out a new film strategy. This isn’t the first time they have been in this situation. However, My Oxford Year showcases in full the issues that they have had for years. All in all, they will either come up with a new way of doing things, or they will continue to do things the same way, and get the same results.
