The show was created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Michelle Randolph, Ali Larter, and Demi Moore. ‘Landman’ takes place in the crude oilfields of West Texas where roughnecks and greedy billionaires further the oil boom. It is based off of Christian Wallace’s podcast ‘Boomtown’, which covered big oil in the Permian Basin during the 21st century.
‘Landman’ was renewed for its second season in March of this year. Season two will contain ten episodes that are sure to keep viewers hooked into the web of schemes and grit. The series stars Billy Bob Thornton as its main character Tommy Norris a petroleum Landman who works for acquisition company M-Tex Oil. He hopes to create equity between the blue collar workers of the oilfields and executives who rule the oil rich lands like kings.
‘Landman’: One of Streaming’s Biggest Hits
Within a month of its debut last fall, ‘Landman’ became Paramount+’s most watched TV show. This go round, there will be some changes in the making of the show. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ali Larter stated that Taylor Sheridan didn’t direct any episodes for this season. “[Stephen Kay] is directing all 10 episodes this year. Last year, Michael Friedman directed three; Stephen directed, I think, five; and Taylor directed a couple. That being said, Taylor would come in and direct all my stuff because he loves forming these characters and he wants them big and bold.”
Filming for the second season took place in Texas and Oklahoma. At the end of the first season, Tommy Norris’ best friend Monty Miller CEO of M-Tex Oil die. Monty Miller was played by actor Jon Hamm. Monty’s widow Cami (Demi Moore) puts the business in the hands of Tommy knowing he will keep his late friend’s vision alive. It was announced in April that Sam Elliott would join the cast. Elliott worked with Taylor Sheridan on the Western miniseries ‘1883’ which featured a cameo from Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton and Elliott also starred in ‘Tombstone’ together in the 1990s.
