A new adaptation of the Jane Austen novel ‘Sense and Sensibility’ is becoming more concrete. The film will be distributed by Focus Features with directing by Georgia Oakley, known for her work on ‘Blue Jean’. Diana Reid is set to do the screenplay. Working Title Films’ chairmen Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan will produce with India Flint and Jo Wallett. In June, Daisy Edgar-Jones teased her leading role as Elinor Dashwood with a photo of herself and the book. The British actor had her breakout role in 2020’s ‘Normal People’ and went on to star in ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ and ‘Twisters’.
Recently, Focus Features made more additions to the cast including George MacKay, Caitríona Balfe, and Fiona Shaw. ‘Sense and Sensibility’ was the first novel written by classic author Jane Austen. The book was published anonymously with ‘By a Lady’ appearing on the title page where Austen’s name should’ve been. Set in the late 18th century, the plot follows the Dashwood sisters as they are forced to leave their estate in Sussex after their father’s death. They set out to find suitors after their leave.
Along with Edgar-Jones, Esme Creed-Miles portrays Marianne Dashwood with Balfe playing the matriarch Mrs. Dashwood. Bodhi Rae Breathnach plays the youngest Dashwood sister Margaret. Fiona Shaw will play Mrs. Jennings, who the sisters stay with while in London. Mackay will portray Elinor’s love interest and Frank Dillane will be Marianne’s initial love interest.
Filming has begun in the United Kingdom.
