A biopic covering the life of Irish singer Sinead O’Connor is officially in the works. Behind the film will be Irish production company ie: entertainment who also executively produced the 2022 documentary ‘Nothing Compares To You’. O’Connor was an iconoclastic artist thrust out of the realms of the industry due to her outspoken views. One of the cataclysmic moments of her career was in 1992 during her performance on Saturday Night Live. O’Connor sang Bob Marley’s ‘War’ and ripped a picture of Pope John Paul II saying “Fight the real enemy.” This was intended to be a statement against child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church but it was not received well.
The biopic is said to have been a possibility since the documentary was released. Josephine Decker who worked on “Shirley” will direct the movie. It will be based off of a script by writer Stacey Gregg. Nine Daughters founder Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly and Iain Canning and Emile Sherman from See-Saw will produce. Tim Clark serves as executive producer on behalf ie: entertainment. BBC Film is funding the film.
O’Connor won several awards over her career including a Grammy award for her album ‘I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got’. She is best known for her cover of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ which came off of that album.
