To say that the opening weekend of ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ was massive would be a considerable understatement. Against a $55 million budget, the film has amassed $199.7 million. It’s domestic and global openings are doing well in the box office. This iteration, is also the biggest opening weekend in the franchise.
Now, it is believed that the horror film has beat out another major horror series, ‘It‘. This weekend, ‘The Conjuring’ beat out ‘It:Chapter Two’ and its opening weekend of $187 million, as well as its predecessor ‘It’ with its $190 million.
In the movie, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. It is based off of the Smurl haunting, which chronicled paranormal activity in the home of Jack and Janet Smurl between 1974 and 1989. The film also features Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Steve Coulter, Kila Lord Cassidy and Beau Gadsdon.
‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ is another example of how horror has ruled the box office in 2025. Recently, ‘Weapons‘ added to the summer’s list of films, achieving both critical and commercial success. ‘Sinners’ rode on a major high for much of the spring and into the following season bringing director Ryan Coogler another box office triumph.
