The “we were on a break” debate sparks conversation after the release of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3. Fans shared their reactions to Jeremiah Fisher and Belly Conklin’s relationship, referencing film and TV couples.
As a recap, Belly and Jeremiah’s relationship had been a rollercoaster for 4 years. Belly and Jeremiah were on a break after an argument when he withheld his spring break plans to Cabo. They got back together when he returned. At a frat party, Belly overhears a girl named Lacie revealing her hookup with Jeremiah during spring break.
The situation sparked debate over the technicality as fans referenced the TV series Friends’ Ross and Rachel’s relationship. For reference, Ross and Rachel fight and decide to take a break. Rachel interpreted the break as temporary, while Ross viewed it as a breakup and slept with another woman. Similar to TSITP, Belly believed they were still together, and Jeremiah thought they were over.
The two situations used the common phrases of “we were on a break” and “you’re not getting out of this on a technicality.” Fans noticed the parallels between the two relationships. Fans questioned whether Jeremiah cheated on Belly. “It’s debatable whether or not that’s considered cheating or not,” Author and showrunner Jenny Han told PEOPLE.
One user on X wrote, “It doesn’t matter if YOU think Jeremiah cheated or not because BELLY considered it cheating.” Some fans created fan edits about Jeremiah and Belly and Ross and Rachel’s relationships, depicting the parallels between the two on TikTok.

Belly dated Conrad Fisher, Jeremiah’s older brother, for a few months before Jeremiah. In the latest episode, Jeremiah proposes to Belly outside the hospital, where her older brother, Steven, recovers after a car accident. Belly accepts his proposal, and the two figure out when to reveal the news to their families, especially Conrad.

In Season 3, Conrad is still in love with Belly and emotionally stuck. After two years, he returns to Cousins Beach, where his family’s beach house is located, to attend his mother’s memorial and reunite with the Fishers and Conklins. At dinner, Belly and Jeremiah announce their engagement and show the ring to her mom, Steven, Conrad, and Mr. Fisher. While neither the Fishers nor the Conklins approve of the engagement and have strong opinions about it, so do the fans.
Fans compared Belly’s engagement scene to The Notebook, where Allie tells Noah she’s engaged, highlighting the emotional similarities between Conrad’s reaction and Noah’s response. One user on X wrote, “Noah and allie were apart for 14 years and still thought about each other everyday so 4 years is nothing for bellyconrad.” Another user on TikTok made an edit with the caption, “the amount of parallels they have is insane.”
